Appartament in T. Reggio Street in Genoa

A Contemporary Renovation in the Heart of Genoa

This project by Filippo Sesti revitalizes a medieval apartment in Genoa's downtown, combining historical elements with a contemporary design language.

Filippo Sesti's renovation of the Appartament in T. Reggio Street in Genoa is a stunning example of blending the old with the new. The apartment, which dates back to the medieval era, has been transformed into a modern residence that pays homage to its architectural heritage while embracing contemporary design principles.

The core of the project lies in the restoration of ancient elements and the celebration of the apartment's architectural quality. Sesti's approach is both philological and innovative, using traditional materials and techniques to bring back the original charm of the space. The result is a harmonious blend of historical and contemporary elements that create a unique and captivating living environment.

One of the standout features of the Appartament in T. Reggio Street is the use of high-tech materials. Frosted steel, crystal, polycarbonate, and lacquered polyester surfaces give the space a sleek and modern feel. Sesti's intention was to create a "pop" architecture, using primary colors such as white, red, and black to add vibrancy and energy to the design.

The apartment spans over 200 square meters, with an additional 30 square meters of mezzanine space. The kitchen, located in the oldest part of the apartment, is housed in a tower dating back to the 1300s. The living room and vestibule offer spacious areas for relaxation and entertainment. The night zone features three bedrooms and two bathrooms, one of which includes a sauna made entirely of green stone. A study room in the mezzanine provides a quiet space for work or reflection.

One of the key aspects of this design is its functionality. Sesti has created a series of paths that connect the various areas of the apartment, allowing for easy movement and flow. The historical identity of the residence has been enhanced through the restoration of wood ceilings and mosaic floors, while the contemporary design elements add a fresh and modern touch.

The Appartament in T. Reggio Street project began in November 2008 and was completed in June 2009. Construction started in January 2010 and finished in December 2010. Throughout the process, Sesti's research focused on finding a way to respect and value the old while incorporating contemporary design. The challenge was to enhance the historical identity of the residence while creating a new architecture that gave it a contemporary identity.

This exceptional renovation project has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. The award honors designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The Appartament in T. Reggio Street in Genoa exemplifies the successful integration of historical and contemporary elements, creating a home that is both timeless and modern.
